Well I’m back with some more information about Keywords and Search Engine Placement for the Newbie Section.
Let’s go over some definitions of what is meant by some of the terms you may see when trying to learn about search engine placement.  Remember that this technical stuff has to do with when YOU are building a web site and naming your page titles, etc.
If you have a replicated site built by your group or company, it’ll be done for you.  Also, if you use a ”site builder” to build your site, most of this will be done for you or they will have a wizard that steps you through asking for your keywords.  There are also programs that you can use to generate meta tags, even if you don’t know how to write code for web sites.
We’re going to be talking about “tags” so let’s get a definition for what tags are in computer talk.
Tags= “A sequence of characters in a markup language used to provide information, such as formatting specifications, about a document.”
So tags are part of the language or code which describe to the Internet what is to be seen by either the viewer or the machines involved with reading the web site.
I found that the term “head tags” are the main tags. To give you an idea of what I’m talking about, here is a definition of head tags.  The head element can contain “information” about the document. The browser does not display the "head information" to the user. The following tags are used in the body of the “head tags.” They are the <base>, <link>, <title>, <script>, <style>, and <meta> tags.
Here is an example of the way it should appear for a site about horseracing.
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Handicapping Thoroughbred Horses</TITLE>
<META name="description" content="Everything you wanted to know about horseracing, from records to breeding purposes.">
<META name="keywords" content="horses, horse’s pedigree, horse diseases, horse’s records">
<HEAD>
For today, what are meta tags?
Meta tags mainly describe what a site has to offer.  There are a couple of types of meta tags.  Let’s talk about the Meta Description Tag.
Meta description tags are descriptions filled with keywords about your site.  It’s obvious what keywords are.  They are the main words that would describe what your site is about or contains.  The meta keywords tag contains the main words only, not in sentence form.
When you are using meta tags, make sure it’s carefully written right from the start. If it doesn’t describe what your site has to offer in the first 250 words or less, it may be missed completely by many search engines.

Some engines ONLY support meta tags so they are quite important.

The meta description tag should contain multiple keywords organized in a logical sentence. You may come to understand that there is an art to writing these descriptions.  If you place the keywords at the beginning of your description and close to each other in the sentence, you may achieve better search engine rankings.
The meta description tag is also very important because some engines use it to summarize a site on the search results page. For the engines that do this, the reader may actually see this hidden tag.
Make sure it’s an interesting read and enticing to get the reader’s attention.  It does no good to get that great placement if you don’t get the reader who’s done the search to click on your link to go to your page.

If you’re not sure how to define your page, you may start with the first sentence in your web site.
If it’s good enough to entice readers on your web site, it should do the same on the search results page.  So the meta description tag can also be thought of as a marketing tool as well as a means for getting higher rankings in the search engines.
If you come up with a good meta description tag, you can often use it as the description you enter in search engine directories such as Yahoo! and the Open Directory.

Different engines have different preferred lengths of description tags.  Try to use around 150 characters, for your site. Never make your meta tag more than 250 characters long because some results pages will cut it off.  It’s commonly thought that the first words in this tag are often given more weight than the words at the end of the description.
You can take advantage of this by putting the more important key words in the beginning of the description.  It is probably good to limit this tag to one good sentence that is a good description, two if the sentences are short.
Don’t repeat keywords more than 3-7 times in your meta description. Some search engines consider it to be spam.

If you’ll recall, on May 29th, “keywords” was the main topic in our first post in the Newbie Section.  I'll be back with more within a week.
