06.25 No. 4 Post KeywordsHi guys…I’m back with more.
I didn’t cover much about title tags the other day so here is a bit about them.
First thing to know is that the title tag is one of the most important factors in achieving good search engine rankings. A title tag is the part of an HTML code that creates the words that appear in the top bar of your Web browser. The title tag belongs in the <HEAD> section of your source
code, and is followed by the Meta description and Meta keywords tags as I showed you in the example in the last entry.
You may have seen web pages that are labeled "Page 1," "Page 2," or "Home Page" in the browser title bar. Title tags like these are usually from beginner web site builders who may not realize how they can use the title tag for a great description in the browser bar and the search engines.
Having said that, make sure your title tag is very effective when you start to build your website. If you do, chances are you will receive maximum benefits.
Some sites try to squeeze their company name in with their title. It’s okay to do that if it doesn’t appear too busy. Remember, you want your title tag to be very effective right off, so keep it simple. Here’s an example below of a company name and a catchy title:
<HEAD>
<TITLE>ACME TRUCKING LINES, WHEEL DELIVER</TITLE>
</HEAD>
Search engines use title tags to gather information about your Web site. The words in the title tag are what appear in the clickable link on the search engine results page (SERP). What you put in this tag is a definite “key factor” that will rank your website with most major search engines.
Also remember that effective title tags are given a lot of weight in search engines so make sure to use lots of keyword-rich links to your site that also work well with your title. Once you've incorporated your phrases into the text of your site, you'll find creating smart title tags can help with branding as well as get you found in the search engines.
Let’s summarize what we’ve learned about “keywords.”
Tags are code that give information about your site.
Meta tags give the search engines information about your site.
There are three parts for meta tags.
Take a good look at some search engines to get a feel for how meta tags
work and then you’ll see where you’re going with your efforts to best describe
your site.
The three parts consist of:
Title Tag-This is your first chance to sell your Web site when it shows up in
search results. It should be a short summary that shows up under your link and
should describe your business in seven words or less.
Meta Description Tag-This will show up after the title and will provide additional
information about your Web site. It should be a brief description about your business,
products and services. Make it a concise, interesting summary that will entice the searcher to go to your site.
Meta Keyword Tag-This is the list of words that search engines will try to match when
they are responding to search requests. Make sure you use as many words that describe
your business as possible. Put the most important keywords and phrases first. You only have 250 characters.
OK…this should be a good start for you who are building your own sites to know more
about the importance of good keywords and phrases. Once again, check out the search engines and see what makes you want to click on certain links when you do a search.
What’s next? Give me a topic and we’ll see what we can learn together about marketing online, advertising, Web sites, etc.
Thanks.
